Fuel prices in Belgium explained

Fuel prices in Belgium work differently from many other countries. The government sets a maximum price for petrol, diesel, and LPG, based on international oil prices and other cost factors. Petrol stations are not allowed to exceed this price, but they can offer discounts. In practice, you will often pay slightly less than the official maximum price. For international visitors, this is important: the price you see at the pump is usually close to the maximum price, but may vary slightly between stations.

Where can you find the cheapest fuel?

In Belgium, the cheapest fuel is usually found at larger chains, supermarkets, or unmanned petrol stations. Price differences are not large, but can still amount to a few cents per litre. Petrol stations along motorways are generally more expensive due to their location and additional facilities. In urban areas or regions with strong competition, prices are often slightly lower, although differences remain limited due to the maximum price system.

Why do fuel prices change daily?

Maximum fuel prices in Belgium are adjusted regularly, sometimes even daily, based on fluctuations in oil prices, exchange rates, and taxes. Because this price is set centrally, most petrol stations adjust their prices almost simultaneously. Unlike in some other countries, large price swings or local pricing strategies are less common. However, temporary discounts or promotions can still create small price differences between stations.
