Fuel prices in Italy explained
Fuel prices in Italy work differently from many other European countries and can sometimes be confusing for travellers. Unlike countries with fixed or maximum prices, stations largely set their own rates based on location, competition and costs.
A unique feature in Italy is the difference between self-service (fai da te) and full-service (servito). With servito, an attendant refuels your car for you, but you usually pay significantly more per liter. This is important to keep in mind when choosing a pump. Along highways (autostrade), prices are generally higher than in towns or villages, so leaving the motorway can often save money.
Where to find the cheapest fuel?
Cheap refuelling in Italy is usually found at unmanned stations or self-service pumps. These are often marked as โfai da teโ and are noticeably cheaper than full-service stations.
Motorway stations are almost always the most expensive, with differences that can reach 10 to 20 cents per liter. Leaving the motorway briefly can therefore save money. Keep in mind that smaller stations outside cities may sometimes be closed, although self-service is usually available.
Why do fuel prices change daily?
Fuel prices in Italy can vary significantly by region and station, as there is no central maximum price and providers set their own rates. Taxes, transport costs and local competition all play an important role.
The difference between self-service and servito also creates clear price gaps at the same location. In addition, prices change regularly due to oil price fluctuations and exchange rates. For travellers, it therefore pays to compare prices and choose carefully where and how to refuel.
