Fuel prices in the Netherlands explained

Fuel prices in the Netherlands are based on a so-called advisory price: a national guideline set by oil companies that is updated daily.

In practice, you almost never pay this exact price. Petrol stations often offer significant discounts, meaning petrol, diesel or LPG prices at the pump can be tens of cents lower. For international visitors this difference is important: the displayed price at the station is usually already discounted from the advisory price.

Where to find the cheapest fuel?

Cheap refuelling in the Netherlands is usually found off the highway and often in border regions.

Unmanned stations typically offer the lowest prices due to lower operating costs. Competition between stations also leads to lower local prices.

Why do fuel prices change daily?

Petrol and diesel prices in the Netherlands change daily due to oil prices, taxes and exchange rates.

In addition, stations adjust prices based on competition and strategy. This means prices can vary locally and sometimes change multiple times per day, for example during promotions.
